Many school districts have been, and are continuing to look for ways to fill budget gaps, and one way they can do that is through a study of their operating and maintenance costs. Here are some simple suggestions that may help schools and many other similar organizations increase their energy efficiency and thereby reduce their operating costs:
• Turning off unused light fixtures can save nearly ten percent of light energy costs yearly.
• Switching over your old lighted exit signs for newer LED signs means you’ll only have to replace the bulb once every two decades, instead of once a year.
• If it’s time to replace a copier, buy an Energy Star model to save up to 40% more energy.
• Inspect and repair any damaged weather-stripping and caulk at windows and doors before the weather gets colder.
• Schools can implement programs to get students involved in waste-reduction and recycling. Not only can this become part of the learning day, it could result in lower garbage service costs. Ojai schools in California have implemented a “waste stream team” which helps reduce waste.
