City-Sized Hearts_1It’s no surprise that Buffalo, including surrounding towns, would have an ‘extreme’ volunteer number for the home make-over project that occurred on the West Side of the city. I myself was one of the “…about 4,500 people — far more than usual for other “Home Edition” cities” that signed up to be a possible volunteer. Even though I did not get called to help, the feeling that you get from living in the city of Buffalo made you want to show your support anyway.

This was all clearly expressed by the effort put forth at the Massachusetts Avenue residence as well as the rest of the block. Many local businesses donated all types of gifts that ranged from upholstery and landscaping to a car and college tuitions. Painting of other neighboring homes and the creation of gardens and landscaping in vacant lots were provided as well. This project also included a lot of reuse and salvaging of materials during the demolition and construction phases, which put a shade of green around the community.

This city has shown its support not only in sports, with the die-hard Bills and Sabres fans, but also in the community. I know that this is completely obvious to all the locals, but from an out-of-towner like myself, this is a unique trait that represents the Queen City. I am originally from down state, Hudson Valley region, and have been up in Buffalo for the better part of 7 years now. What started out as just a place to go for college has turned into a place for living, working, and enjoying a hospitable city. For a city that might not have a lot of money, the devotion, love and support for it, comes free.
